Trains, Planes, & Automobiles

February 26, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The big day finally arrived beginning with a 5am wake-up and a quick trip to Newark.

The flight was direct to Anchorage, with a stop over in Seattle for an hour. The flight was mostly full, with only a few seats empty.

No luck pulling an upgrade, but I was able to score an emergency row seat.

The flight to Seattle was 5 hours and 10 minutes, flying across 2 time zones. I do not understand why the airlines cannot put power ports on all planes and seats. It would make these flights much more manageable.

I sat next to a homeland security engineer who was really into these headphones call Ultimate Ears. They are a custom molded high fidelity ear speaker that works better than my Bose Noise Canceling headphones.

A one hour layover allowed me a needed leg stretch. I met up with Mike Caporale, one of the other Panasonic trainers, and had a quick drink.

The flight to Anchorage was another 3 hours and one more time-zone away (4 hours behind NY).

On the ground, we gathered all of the luggage and trekked through a maze of buildings and shuttle-buses to get to the rental car counter.

I arrived at the Hilton to find all of our packages had arrived, some 14 cases in total.

Preparing for Alaska

February 21, 2007 · Leave a Comment

Let me share a little bit of my personal life with you. This has been one of the most stressful weeks of my life. Those who have tried to reach me for the past few weeks, this is why I haven’t got back to you :-)

First off, I am preparing for 2 trips in 3 weeks at the Iditarod Sled Dog Race in Alaska. I will be working for Panasonic as a P2 trainer, then as a shooter and editor with a team of 6 others to produce a documentary about the P2 workflow in the extreme cold of Alaska.

That in itself is a major challenge, coordinating gear, crew and cold weather clothing on short notice.

Add to that on February 9th, my wife gave birth to our 2nd son, Alexander John-Francis Aldrich.

A smart person would not plan things out that way, but then again no one has every acused me of being smart :-)

But wait, there’s more.

My kitchen and family room went through a major remodel and I was confined to my home office and one bedroom. Dealing with the dust and dirt and electrical interuptions is not enjoyable. It was so bad that my family packed it up and headed south until the baby was born.

Now that the remodeling is near the end, hopefully my wife can come home. Just in time for me to leave :-)

Anyway, I will try to blog from Alaska and I promise to take some cool pictures of the Northern Lights.
